Flat Overhand Bend
The Flat Overhand Bend (often referred to in climbing circles as the European Death Knot or EDK) is a simple, offset join formed by tying a basic overhand knot using two parallel strands. While it has a reputation in specific applications for gliding over edges without snagging, it is fundamentally the wrong tool for high-tension line pulling. For trade professionals, relying on a Flat Overhand Bend to splice pulling lines like mule tape is a recipe for catastrophic failure in the field.


How to Tie the Flat Overhand Bend
Hold the ends of two lines parallel to each other, pointing in the same direction.
Treat both lines as a single strand and form a simple loop near the working ends.
Pass both working ends together through the loop to form a basic overhand knot.
Pull all four ends (both standing lines and both tails) firmly to set the knot into place.

Sheet Bend – A fast, reliable alternative for joining lines of unequal thickness or temporary leads without creating excessive bulk.
History of the Flat Overhand Bend
Historically, the Flat Overhand Bend gained popularity in alpine climbing during the late 20th century as a rapid method for joining two ropes for rappelling. Climbers favored it because its offset profile sits flat against rock surfaces, reducing the risk of the knot catching in cracks or over ledges during retrieval. However, its low resistance to capsizing when subjected to heavy, sustained pull weights was widely documented through testing. While it holds an established place in lightweight, low-tension rappelling setups, its structural limitations make it inherently unsafe for the heavy, continuous tensile loads common in industrial construction.
Uses for Electricians and Construction
Put simply, electricians and line workers should avoid using the Flat Overhand Bend on job sites. Its primary flaw in commercial or industrial wire pulls is its dangerous instability under high load. When used to splice together 2,500 lb mule tape in a hurry, putting a tugger on the line causes the knot to capsize—it slowly rolls over itself under heavy tension until the tails slip through and it completely unties. Furthermore, the knot is unnecessarily bulky. In a 3/4" conduit run, a Flat Overhand tied in heavy mule tape forms a thick, bulbous knot that has to be reefed on to force through tight fittings, leading to jams, snapped lines, and wasted time. As a final knock against this bend, if it doesn't fly apart under a real load, it will definitely jam to the point of becoming permanent.
