Constrictor Hitch

The Constrictor Hitch (ABoK #1249) is widely regarded as one of the most severe binding hitches in cordage work, known for its intense bite on cylindrical objects. While often over-hyped in online knot circles as a universal fix, it remains a specialized tool in practical field work. It excels when you need a semi-permanent anchor on a slick pole, pipe, or round conduit, and it serves as a solid starting hitch for certain lashings. However, its tendency to jam combined with its poor performance on irregular, flat, or angular surfaces means it requires realistic expectations and proper modification on the job site.

​How to Tie the Constrictor Hitch

  • ​Pass the Working End: Wrap the line around the round pole or pipe to form an initial turn around the object.

  • Cross the Standing Part: Bring the working end back over top of the standing part, creating a diagonal riding turn across the front.

  • ​Complete the Turn: Pass the working end around the back of the object a second time, staying parallel to the first wrap.

  • ​Tuck the End: Tuck the working end beneath the diagonal riding turn, passing over the underlying standing part to form an overhand knot locked under the outer turn.

  • ​Dress and Set: Pull both ends firmly in opposite directions to snug the riding turn down, setting the friction cross against the pipe surface.

History of the Constrictor Hitch

First formally cataloged by Clifford Ashley in The Ashley Book of Knots (1944), the Constrictor Hitch was praised for its ability to hold firm where traditional hitches like the Clove Hitch would slip. Historically utilized by sailors, sailmakers, and millers for binding grain sacks and seizing rope ends, its mechanics rely on an internal overhand knot crushed under an outer binding turn under tension. It is based on structure, a close cousin to the Clove Hitch, Munter Hitch, and Marlinspike Hitch, but performs a wildy different function. These hitches are good for grabbing hold with varying degrees of friction and purpose, but they release all easily. A Constrictor Hitch clamps down hard and refuses to release.

​While it shouldn't replace your standard utility hitches for everyday rigging, the Constrictor Hitch is a valuable tool when matched with the right rounded profile and especially when secured with a slip loop for easy release.

While the Constrictor Hitch excels when maximum binding power is required on smooth, circular profiles, it is far from a one-size-fits-all solution for everyday field operations. Because it locks down so tightly and struggles on non-cylindrical surfaces, matching the right knot to your specific task saves both time and cordage. Applications for Electricians & Construction

In electrical and trade applications, the Constrictor Hitch functions primarily as a high-friction anchor on smooth, round cylindrical surfaces like PVC, EMT, rigid conduit, or utility poles. It also serves as a useful binder to close up a soft bag or sack. And finally, it plays a reliable role in starting and finishing structural lashings. However, its trade utility is bound by two critical operational factors:

  • Shape Sensitivity: The knot relies on continuous, uniform tension around a circular perimeter. On irregular, square, or flat-faced objects, the hitch loses its binding force and will fail or slip.

  • Jamming & Quick-Release Slipping: Because a standard Constrictor Hitch binds so aggressively that it frequently requires a knife to remove, giving it a quick-release slip (forming a Slipped Constrictor Hitch) is a crucial modification. Tying the final tuck with a bight maintains full gripping power while allowing you to untie it instantly when finished.

If you look through published literature and online, you will find a vast assortment of ways to tie this hitch. For me though, I like to visualize it as a Munter Hitch, which is then fed around the standing line and back through the initial loop.
